Quick and Easy Biscuits

Craving a thick and hearty biscuit? These biscuits are quick and easy to make and go perfect with anything. Whether it’s sausage and gravy, or you want to pair it with butter and homemade jam, these are the biscuits for you.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour- Foundation for your biscuit. This is the main ingredient and what gives structure to your biscuit.
  • Baking Powder- This is crucial in getting your biscuits to rise. It also adds to the light airy texture.
  • Sugar- This little touch of flavor enhances the biscuit without making them oversweet. It also aids in achieving that golden brown color that we love seeing at the end of the baking stage.
  • Salt- Never underestimate the power of salt. I add it to just about everything I bake. It truly enhances the flavor already there and compliments the other ingredients.
  • Salted butter- The fat and salt content of this butter help to achieve that end result we’re looking for in this biscuit.
  • Half and Half- This will add that much needed moisture to your biscuits, so they don’t dry out. Adds to the tender crumble we look for and helps with the rich taste of this biscuit.

Tips

Cold butter is essential when making these biscuits. It what helps achieve those light airy flaky layers everyone loves in their biscuits. The cold butter creates little pockets of steam as it melts inside the biscuit, when leads to that desired flakiness. Be sure to keep your butter in the fridge right up until you need it, that way it stays as cold as can be. You don’t want it to melt too much when mixing it in and kneading it.

Handle Dough Sparingly: The less you work with the dough, and knead the dough, the better. Overworking the dough can lead to melted butter, and tough biscuits. Try to work the dough as little as possible.

Flour Generously: Don’t be afraid to add more flour if your dough appears too sticky. Adding in more flour helps to keep it from sticking to your counter as well and your hands, and once again helps to not overwork the dough.

Preheated Oven: While you may be tempted to stick this in when the oven is still preheating, don’t. You don’t want to place these in and have them gradually cook while your oven is still temping. Placing them in a heated oven helps ensure these bakes properly and to achieve that golden crust. An oven that’s not hot enough can also lead to flat, hard biscuits, which let’s be honest, no one tends to like those.

Cutting your biscuits: If you don’t have a biscuit cutter, no worries. You can use any round object such as a cup or small bowl. Just be sure to flour the rim so the biscuits won’t stick to the object and will come off easier.

Variations

  • Herbs: Want that added aromatic flavor? Add a little fresh or jarred herbs to your mix, such as rosemary or thyme. A tablespoon should do just fine. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the flavor.
  • Whole Wheat: Want a healthier option, then switch it out for whole wheat flour, while this does change the flavor profile just a little, it doesn’t change the texture too much as you will still have those flakey layers, just with extra fiber added in.
  • Dairy Substitute: No half and half, you can switch it out for milk, or if you want to go for a ricker biscuit, try buttermilk. Buttermilk biscuits are just a little bit denser, but still equally delicious.

What to serve these with?

My go to for these biscuits is definitely going to be adding some gravy and sausage on top. You really can’t go wrong with homey biscuits and gravy. Serve it as breakfast or switch it up and have it for lunch. Either way, these will be sure to fill you up.

Another favorite is to add your favorite jam or jelly to them. Slice these biscuits in half and slather a good amount of that jam right on them. Feeling adventurous, add just a smidgen of butter first before you add your jam.

You can also enjoy these biscuits with a good hearty soup. Dip them in that go to homemade chicken noodle soup you love so much. Even better is dipping them in your stew, it soaks up all the delicious flavor. Whatever you choose, it’ll be good.
